Code of Conduct

At Music Club, we take the safety and comfort of all our members very seriously and are constantly working to build a more inclusive space. Our biggest goal at Music Club is to foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable to explore their musical creativity. We take our Code of Conduct very seriously. We strive to uphold these principles at all Music Club related events and throughout our daily lives and we ask that our members do the same.

This Code of Conduct is meant to lay out what behavior is and is not acceptable from our members, participants, and our leaders, and detail how we will work to enforce those principles. This Code of Conduct applies to any interactions between club members, participants, and leaders, including during club meetings and at events. This document will ensure that all members of our community are encouraged to participate equally and that our events are safe and welcoming for all people. In order to provide a safe and inclusive environment, club members are expected to treat each other with respect and courtesy. In specific, the following are expectations for all new and existing members of Music Club:

  • Use welcoming and inclusive language in all in person interactions and through announcements and communications.

  • Point out any racist, sexist, classist, ableist, homophobic, or other biased/exclusionary comments and jokes made by Music Club members when they happen, intentional or not. This includes language or jokes that can be classified as microaggressions.

  • Be respectful and acknowledge differing viewpoints, experiences, and cultures.

  • Acknowledge our own privilege and advocate for Music Club members who might not have the same privileges as you.

  • Be kind and supportive to all members. If you disagree with someone, challenge the idea, not the person.

  • Use the correct gender pronouns and lived names for Music Club members and accept feedback gracefully if corrected.

Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants and members include:

  • The use of sexualized language or imagery and unwelcome physical contact, sexual attention, or advances.

  • Trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal attacks towards any of our members’ identities.

  • Public or private harassment, including offensive or degrading language.

  • Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic address, without explicit permission. This includes any sort of "outing" of any aspect of someone's identity without their consent.

  • Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in an intersectional feminist space.

Music Club members are encouraged to be active bystanders. An active bystander is someone who observes offensive or discriminatory behavior and takes substantive steps to address the situation.

Music Club members, participants, and event leaders are responsible for upholding the terms of this Code of Conduct, and reporting violations if they encounter them. Participants asked to stop any harassing or discriminatory behavior are expected to comply immediately. If you witness a Code of Conduct violation from a member, event participant, or leader, or if you have concerns about past behaviors, please contact the Music Club Board (musicclubucla@gmail.com). Members in violation of this code of conduct may be subject to verbal warnings, removal of individuals from events, barring individuals from engaging with Music Club spaces or events in the future, blocking the offending individual from engaging with the Music Club social media accounts, and/or reporting an incident with UCLA’s Discrimination Prevention Office. Thank you for your dedication to keeping the Music Club community safe, welcoming, and inclusive.
